I have always wanted to drive Highway 1, the coast highway, but never had the time to do it properly. Reading this book makes me feel like I have traveled every mile and became acquainted with all the scenery, flora, fauna and history of its entire length. What's more, instead of making me feel like that dream can now be taken off my bucket list, I am all the more interested in doing it in person. Plus the author has pointed out several locations along the way that I also want to see, but never heard of until reading this book. Horse lovers without an iota of interest in California geography might still enjoy it because he includes the horse he is riding in much of the commentary.Product details

California Coast Trails J Smeaton Chase 9781116315660 Books Reviews
Hard to imagine a California where you could ride a horse from the South border to the north border. Author does a wonderful job explaining the experience, the fauna, topography, towns and people. The language is exquisite.
Great vision of the California coast before it became The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
Good story and a colorful narrative. Authentic language and thought for that period.
California long ago, was a paradise. Mr. Smeaton and a friend went south-to-north on horseback without hurrying. I could only wish that I could have participated.
2nd time I've read it (along with Brewer's " Up and Down California 1860-1864") and still rank it among favorites of all time. I'm 5th generation Californian and have travelled many of the places described not all that long ago. What a contrast, though the natural history persists in many places.
A fascinating read for a California native. Many of the places he visits are now historical sites, many others have disappeared altogether, and almost all are located along 101 and Hwy 1.
Sort of a "Travels With Charlie" 100 years ago. Anyone that loves the California coast will enjoy this log of an Englishman's experiences with the terrain on the western edge of the continent and it's early population before modern transportation and widespread development of roads and cities. Chase has a gift for inciteful descriptions of everything and everyone he comes upon, making you feel as if you are traveling along with him and his trusty equine companion. Much has changed since then, but much has not - particularly the coastal fog in its varied forms encroaching into the deep forests and valleys every evening and the feeling that the coast is a refreshing world removed from the rest of the country.
